Atune + byrd
ATune and byrd have been leaving their trace on the city of Canberra since the mid-nineties. 'Embrace' is their latest project which involves stepping away from responding to the received forms of the city, to collaborate on the construction of an object to be painted.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Both Atune and byrd work as painters on, and in response to space - their outdoor paintings are site specific. This mode of production has grown from their roots in the Graffiti scene; Graffiti being a political activity enacted on urban spaces. Generally, it's tolerated in the forgotten and unrealized parts of the city, the soft edges.
Atune builds deep abstract space into essentially flat (2 dimensional) surface paintings. He has a heightened economy of formal elements which he manipulates to a myriad of effects. In his pictorial spatial interventions, he uses layers, tone, and line to create fluidity, explosions, tension and harmony through dense clusters and layered erasures.
Byrd pursues similar outcomes through reduction. He has a set of forms and patterns which are used in combination with colour relations, blocking, and layered erasure through both active and negative spaces.
