MILS Gallery comes from Sydney, teamed with Hotel Hotel, to present an exhibition of historic shields from Papua New Guinea and new Western art.
The concept came about when researching the Highlander shields. The design of the each shield is the personal expression of the bearer. Each shield was carved and designed to represent each soldier their beliefs and intentions. However the shields purpose was to be used in arranged battles. They were to be seen from a distance, side by side as a single object. The combination of personal expressions formed a grande glowing shape that instilled fear into the rival warriors.
Combining individual pursuit and expression forms something that is greater than its parts.
Curated by Adriano Rosselli. Exhibiting artists: Eko Bambang Wisnu, Eva Troyeur-Gibson, Adriano Rosselli, Huw Lewis, Nicole Toms, Roman Stachurski, Harry Townsend, Kaspar Kagi, PNG Highlander shields.
