Old Media Orchestra

Living mural of 1970s media

Film / Moving Image

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Join the Old Media Orchestra making a living mural over 50 minutes from porous media that lets you look inside its ‘black box’, like super 8 film, slide film, reel to reel audio and overhead projectors.

Right now what we––you and I and all of us––do with our technologies matters. This summer has shown us that what we are doing right now is terrifying both to us (the old people) and you, who are, rightly, coming after us.

Dwell with us as we perform these old machines and learn something about how we got into this mess and just maybe, how we can get out of it––artists T Benson, L Curham, M Jolly, R Johnson with special guests S Golding and D Feeney.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

The Old Media Orchestra is an experimental media group convened for You Are Here made up of those in and around Canberra who fruitfully muck around with old media. Some of them are as old or older than the media, some of them are not.

The Orchestra is convened by Louise Curham. Louise works with Wollongong artist Lucas Ihlein under the nom de plume Teaching and Learning Cinema alongside her work specialising in old media from the 1970s. That involves re-enacting '70s media art performance and failing on purpose with 16mm and super 8 to make films, performance and their detritus for performance, galleries and occasionally as straight films.
